Dr. Mai Gu

Dr. Gu is a certified surgical pathologist and cytopathologist by the American

Board of Pathology and specializes in ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration

(FNA) and core biopsy of the superficial organs, such as the breast, thyroid,

salivary glands, lymph nodes, and subcutaneous soft tissue of any sites.

 

Dr. Gu graduated from Peking University Health Science Center (formerly

Beijing Medical University) in 1988 and received her PhD degree in

Pharmacology & Therapeutics from the School of Medicine, University of

Manitoba in Canada in 1992. She finished her residency training in Anatomic

and Clinical Pathology at the Weill Cornell Medical College in 1997. She then

completed one year of fellowship training in Oncologic Surgical Pathology

followed by one year of fellowship training in Cytopathology, both at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. During 1999-2013, Dr. Gu has been a faculty member in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of California Irvine Medical Center. She was clinical professor and the director of Cytology Laboratory and Cytopathology Fellowship Program at UCI Medical Center during 2008-2013.

 

With her extensive clinical experiences, Dr. Gu has performed and interpreted thousands of FNA biopsies with diagnostic accuracy of over 95%. She also published dozens of scientific papers in the field of pathology in peer-reviewed medical journals and was invited multiple times to lecture at regional, national, and international meetings. A list of publication links is viewable here.

 

Dr. Gu holds an Endocrine Certificate in Neck Ultrasound (ECNU) of the American College of Endocrinology. The ECNU credential certifies that a physician displays high level of competence in both diagnostic and interventional neck ultrasound. Dr. Gu is also certified by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) in ultrasound-guided FNA. Thousands of patients have been referred to her at the FNA clinic of PathCare Diagnostics Inc She has received unanimous praise from both the referring physicians and the patients because of her compassion for patients, her delicate and gentle biopsy skills, and most of all her accurate immediate diagnosis. As a result, PathCare Diagnostics Inc has become one of the largest specialty centers of interventional cytopathology in Southern California.
